In a very stark warning to Australia, our previous Defence Force Chief, Admiral Chris Barrie has said that the conflicts occurring now are like the conditions that led to World War 1, and these developments are extremely serious for Australia and our National Interests.
Admiral Barrie also said that with the nuclear crisis in North Korea and naval clashes in the South China Sea that Australia could soon be invaded, and only yesterday, North Korea again threatened Australia.
Whilst I disagree with Admiral Barrie that Australia will soon be invaded, I do agree that more needs to be done regarding our National Security and that of protecting Australia and my fellow Australians. Our national defence, and the defence of our citizens is not a political football and it's time our security is taken more seriously as we're facing challenges on many fronts, and our defence force and our capabilities are extremely stretched at present.
With China aggressively expanding into the South China Sea and arming disputed islands, more needs to be done to combat these developments and reduce the threat this now poses to numerous countries, not least Australia and our National interest.
I therefore call on Australia to work with our allies to form a pacific defence partnership (a pacific NATO of sorts) and to immediately undertake freedom of navigation exercises through the South China Seas, firstly to review what China has been doing in militarizing disputed territory and secondly, to enforce international maritime law.
The world and our leaders must learn from the mistakes of the past, and whilst Australia is a sovereign country, so is China and North Korea, and equally we all have an important place to play in ensuring the safety, health, welfare and future of all throughout the world.
